Tree Trails

KS1 Plants including parts

KS2 Identification. Classification. Structures.

A fun session investigating and identifying types of trees and learning ways in which they are classified, led by a tree expert. This includes the differences between deciduous and evergreen trees, types of leaves, types of flowers and seeds, and how and why these vary, also identifying trees from their shape and bark (for example when deciduous trees are bare). Weather permitting we go on a walking tree trail; if the weather is poor we sample leaves and other clues to identify them indoors. At the end of the session the children should be more able to distinguish and identify different types of trees and learn how they are classified.

We record examples on pre-prepared worksheets, with potential for analysis and discussion back in the classroom later.
