Volunteer helping older people in care homes as Museum Care Ambassador. We believe everyone should have access to their culture and heritage and Nottingham Museums & Galleries have been developing a project to help bring our collections to those that cannot access them. We have already recruited a number of skilled volunteers who are delivering sessions with the common theme of reminiscing. We are now looking for additional people with a range of skills and with a passion for arts and culture to engage with older people in care settings, making steps to increase cultural entitlement and supporting an ‘age friendly’ city; all you need is time and a little imagination.
NCMG will provide full training so that you can deliver specialist sessions within an older community. You will gain a better understanding of safeguarding for vulnerable adults and dementia awareness, amongst ongoing training opportunities offering you the right tools to feel confident in your delivery. Learn how you can help inspire and challenge the way people experience and explore their ideas about the diversity of the world through the creative use of museum resources. We ask that you get involved in researching and developing activities tailored to groups with multiple needs, so you should be flexible, be a creative thinker or practitioner and have experience or an understanding of this group. Any experience of activity facilitation would be an advantage.
If your passion is the arts and culture, caring for and empowering often unrepresented groups, or you simply love reminiscing, and the journey of ‘bygones’ then you are just the person we are looking for.
Our current volunteers are from wide backgrounds and have diverse skills ranging from a retired senior social worker with a passion for vintage toys to a newly graduated photographer. Participants across the city have enjoyed informal chats as they recall things from ‘back in their days’, to having a big group sing-a-long and have even taken their first ever ‘selfie’. Whatever the activity, the common outcome has been smiles and laughter.
